Summary: Since the self-portrait of himself onto a wooden ball, Self-Portrait in a Convex Mirror by Parmigianino in 1524, people have used many ways to express themselves. People started by drawing portraits to express themselves, as only the rich or high social level people were taught how to read and write. Since then, people started diaries, and since the technology age has started, we use blogs, selfies, and social media to express ourselves. We’ve always searched for ways to express ourselves and have created many ways to do this online, i.e, Twitter, Tumblr, Snapchat, Instagram and many more. We want to express ourselves but also feel shame or embarrassment in doing so and the anonymity of the internet has helped us feel safer doing so. We’ve also been taught that being outgoing or imperfect is a bad thing that we should be ashamed of and blogging is weird; putting your thoughts out where anyone can see them.
Commentary: I think that the idea that we are taught to be ashamed of being outgoing or put yourself out there is very true. I personally have a history with this, if you see me in class I’m usually very quiet and never raise my hand to say anything, but if you read my blog you can see that I have plenty of things to say. Another thing you can do to see how this attitude people have is to look for a picture of me on my Instagram, watch for a selfie or even look for one on here (my Instagram username is nate.pringle and my snapchat is littlegunman if you wanna check) you’ll never find one as I feel uncomfortable taking selfies. I feel like it’s looked down upon to take pictures of yourself since its seen as narcissistic in my family.
